Head: Strategy & Business Systems at the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory

Adrian completed a PhD in Radio Astronomy from Rhodes University, after completing degrees in physics and electronics, computer science, music and telecommunications. He joined the South African SKA Project in 2005 as a project scientist, and currently holds the position of Head: Strategy & Business Systems at the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory, which is responsible for managing South Africa’s involvement in the international SKA Project as well as the construction and operation of the MeerKAT radio telescope.

Adrian’s role within the SKA project has been varied, and he has been involved in key projects including:

  1. The establishment of a protected radio astronomy reserve in the Northern Cape Province;

  2. The compilation and submission of Africa’s successful bid proposal to host the SKA project;

  3. The negotiation and establishment of an inter-governmental treaty organisation for the construction and operation of the SKA radio telescope.

Adrian has represented South Africa on various international spectrum management committees, with a particular expertise in passive radio astronomy services.
